Interactive Brokers Group, Inc. Class A emphasized that in the crazy quantum computing market of the past week, investors have been buying stocks such as IonQ Inc (IONQ.US).
The company stated on Tuesday that in the past week, IonQ Inc and D-Wave Quantum (QBTS.US) had risen to the fifth and thirteenth spots, respectively, among the 25 most active stocks on the trading platform. The company noted that both stocks had dropped by over 30% last Wednesday. Rigetti Computing (RGTI.US), which had been holding the third spot on the weekly rankings, fell by 45% last week.
IBKR Chief Strategist Steve Sosnick stated, "[All] show net buying activity. Volatility and volume continue to be an irresistible combination for our active trading clients, although 'buying on dips' may be trying to catch a falling knife."
Sosnick noted that the surge in activity highlighted the influence of NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) CEO Jensen Huang, described as "the most important person in technology investing," on the stock market. Huang's recent comments had discounted quantum computing stocks. Huang had stated at a consumer electronics show that "very useful" quantum computers would still take over a decade to emerge.
Since Alphabet Inc.'s Alphabet Inc. Class C launched its Willow quantum computing chip last month, the sector's stocks have been soaring, but Sosnick added that Alphabet had not yet disclosed when the chip might become commercialized.
Meanwhile, NVIDIA Corporation itself regained the top spot on the Interactive Brokers Group, Inc. Class A weekly activity list. This shift occurred against the backdrop of "fairly stunning net buying activity" despite the stock's mediocre performance during the five-day data coverage period, Sosnick noted. "Buying on dips is really working out," he said.
During the trading session on January 15, quantum computing stock prices were soaring. B. Riley Securities maintained their "buy" ratings for Rigetti and D-Wave Quantum and raised their stock price targets. On Tuesday, the IonQ stock price rose after the company and the state of Maryland announced a $1 billion plan to establish Maryland as a hub for quantum computing.
NVIDIA Corporation later announced on Tuesday that they would be hosting the first Quantum Day event at their annual GTC conference, with a focus on artificial intelligence.
