According to a foreign media report, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party this morning. Sources revealed that Trudeau will continue to serve as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen. He is expected to address the nation at 10:45 am Eastern Time from his residence at Rideau Cottage.
In recent years, Trudeau has faced increasing pressure to resign, especially as his public support has continued to decline, including calls from party members. Reports indicate that at least two dozen members of parliament, as well as party groups in various regions including Atlantic China Welding Consumables, Inc., Quebec, and Ontario, have called for Trudeau to step down.
Trudeau's political future was thrown into crisis last month. His trusted ally Chrystia Freeland resigned from her position as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister at CKH HOLDINGS. On the day of her resignation, she had planned to release the fall economic statement.
In a subsequent public letter posted on social media, Freeland revealed that Trudeau had tried to move her to another position within the cabinet, leaving her no choice but to resign. She also criticized Trudeau's handling of the economy, stating that the government's "high-cost political gimmicks" exacerbated problems and urged him to work with provincial premiers to address the tariff threats raised by US President Trump.
Furthermore, Freeland mentioned in the letter that she and Trudeau recently had disagreements on how to deal with the incoming US government, further exposing divisions within the Liberal Party.
The Conservative Party has led in the polls consistently over the past year, and they plan to table a motion of no confidence against the Liberal government in the new year. If all goes according to plan, Members of Parliament in the lower house could potentially vote on a motion of no confidence in the Trudeau government as early as January 30.
Trudeau's decision to resign as leader of the Liberal Party may be an attempt to prevent further internal divisions and address the upcoming political crisis. However, the future direction and leadership of the Liberal Party will be the focus in the days ahead.
