The level of trust among strangers is an important indicator of the level of social civilization development, and it is crucial for promoting collaboration and development, enhancing harmony and stability, and improving the well-being of the people. In recent years, has the level of trust among strangers increased? What are the underlying factors that promote this? Can carpooling increase trust among strangers? What trust spill-over effects can it bring?
In October, after DIDA INC (02559) launched a carpool strangers trust survey, users from all over the country actively participated, receiving a total of 7144 responses, including tens of thousands of written opinions, vividly showing the latest social civilization. Based on this, today, DIDA INC officially released the "2024 Carpool and Stranger Trust Survey Report", which is also the first specialized report in the country on the trust between strangers and the social impact, underlying motivations, and relationships with travel scenarios on shared travel platforms. The report, based on the questionnaire survey, also analyzed and summarized hundreds of millions of Dida Xiaohong flowers stories from 2023 to 2024. It analyzed from five dimensions: "Current Status and Influencing Factors of Stranger Trust", "Scenarios in which strangers are more likely to build trust", "Spillover effect of trust between strangers in carpooling", "Carpooling Platform Stranger Trust Framework", and "Carpooling Stranger Trust Scene", and came up with the following five major new discoveries: 1. More than 70% of respondents believe that trust between strangers has increased currently, with more than 40% believing that trust has significantly increased. This is mainly manifested in being more willing to help, more courteous, more polite and friendly, and less defensive. The top three reasons for this increase are social media, internet platforms, and personal credit systems. 2. Over 80% of users believe that internet platforms help to enhance trust between strangers. The top three meanings of enhancing trust between strangers are: making cities warmer and more hospitable, promoting social harmony and stability, and enhancing social civilization. 3. The top three scenarios where strangers are more likely to trust each other are, in sequence: carpooling, hospitals, and stations, with percentages of 85.33%, 28.77%, and 22.03% respectively. The top three reasons for carpooling to enhance trust between strangers are: mutual benefit, simple and pure relationship between passengers, and more likely to have common topics. 4. The top five product mechanisms for carpool platforms to enhance trust between strangers are: displaying personal credit scores, platform security guarantee mechanisms, display of positive ratings, display of real-name authentication, and showing whether they are traveling together. At the same time, users also expect other trust-enhancing mechanisms, including displaying the number of Xiaohong flowers received and displaying interest tags. 5. More than 70% of respondents have received kindness from strangers. Over 80% of users said that the warm experience of carpooling and Xiaohong flowers would make them more trusting and friendly towards strangers. More than 70% of respondents believe that trust between strangers has increased currently, with a focus on being more willing to help, more courteous, more polite and friendly, and less defensive. This survey invited users to share in-depth views on whether the trust between strangers in their cities has increased compared to five or six years ago and how it is being manifested. According to statistics, the proportion of respondents who chose "significantly increased" and "slightly increased" reached 41.39% and 28.95% respectively, totaling more than 70%. The proportion who considered the increase to be "not significant" is 24.21%. From users' sharing of specific manifestations, it can be seen that the increase in trust between strangers is mainly reflected in the following four aspects: being more willing to help, being more courteous, being more polite and friendly, and being less defensive. For example, in terms of being more willing to help, users shared: "If someone suddenly falls ill and faints in places like the subway, someone will step forward to use an AED to save them", "More people are participating in public welfare activities", "If the car door and windows are not closed, someone will remind me". Regarding being more courteous, users shared: "The behavior of yielding to pedestrians and improving traffic order", "There are more people who voluntarily give up their seats on public transport", "Courtesy among neighbors in the elevator", "Sometimes when driving in a carpool, you may need to turn around to reach the destination, but passengers will be understanding and get off first, walking a short distance". Regarding being more polite and friendly, users shared: "Meeting unfamiliar people in the neighborhood, occasionally nodding and smiling at each other", "My hometown has become a tourist city, and everyone has become much warmer". Regarding being less defensive, users shared: "If a previous carpool passenger leaves something behind in the car, the next passenger will not touch it", "Due to the real-name system of carpool platforms, passengers and drivers worry much less on long trips". Regarding the top three factors that make strangers trust each other more, the interviewed users chose the top three items in order: "Social media is more developed, allowing higher frequency of information exchange, comments, and interactions between strangers", "Internet platforms promote user credit transparency, public evaluation, and fill information gaps", and "Personal credit record systems are becoming more perfect", all with a percentage of over 60%. Additionally, the selections "The government and media are positively guiding" and "Publicly punishing those who breach trust" had percentages of 53.86% and 42.15% respectively. Furthermore, users mentioned the following macro social motivations: including "a more sound and complete rule of law", "improvement in cultural education levels driving the improvement of national quality", "improvement in living standards leading to broader horizons and cognitions", "personal credit being more transparent and searchable", and "improved social security". Over 80% of users believe that internet platforms help to enhance trust between strangers, with the top three meanings being to make cities warmer and more hospitable, promote social harmony and stability, and reduce interpersonal conflicts and enhance social civilization. According to the research, the top three meanings of enhancing trust between strangers are, in sequence: "making cities warmer and more hospitable", "promoting social harmony and stability", "reducing interpersonal conflicts, and enhancing social civilization", with percentages exceeding 70%. Regarding the role of internet platforms in enhancing trust between strangers, 41.98% of respondents believe that they have a "very significant role", and 40.6% believe they have "some role", together accounting for over 82%. Only 13.3% believe their role is limited. A user who believed that internet platforms have a "very significant role" stated, "Internet platforms enhance transparency in transactions through user evaluations, real-name authentication, transaction records, etc., allowing both parties to evaluate each other's reputation based on this information, thereby enhancing trust. Many platforms provide secure trading mechanisms, such as third-party payments, after-sales service guarantees, user privacy protection, etc., reducing transaction risks and enhancing user security". Another user stated, "The internet and big data have memory, and will permanently mark a person's stain, thus making it easier for people to consciously do good"; "In itself, everyone is a stranger."Because there is an intersection due to a shared ride. The carpool platform will display information related to the credit of both parties, such as credit level or badges earned, which can easily deepen trust between strangers. The users who believe that it "has some effect" think that "the cost of trust between strangers has been reduced, kindness is the mainstream voice," and "the crowd guided by positive energy transmission is large, and the spread speed is also fast." On the other hand, the users who think that it has a limited effect suggest that for low-reputation behavior, penalties should be increased further, and trust should be based more on "actual interaction between people," and "offline integration is also needed." The top four scenarios where strangers are more likely to trust each other are: carpooling, hospitals, stations, and buses. Carpooling accounts for over 80%, hospitals for nearly 30%, and train stations and airports for over 20%. So, in which daily life scenarios are strangers more likely to trust each other? The top four scenarios chosen by the respondents are carpooling, hospitals, train stations and airports, and buses. The selection rates are 85.33%, 28.77%, 22.03%, and 14.05% respectively. The surveyed users who chose "carpooling" believe that "carpooling has common destinations and departure points, making it easier to have intersections in daily life and work"; "real carpooling does not involve interests, it is a purely convenient way of travel for you, me, and them, making it easier for everyone to communicate sincerely and open their hearts"; "Like the introduction on the Dida interface: we are all fellow travelers, which lowers people's guard against strangers and increases trust through conversation." At the same time, the vast majority of surveyed users believe that compared to other modes of transportation, carpool hosts and passengers are more likely to be friendly, helpful, and honest. The top three reasons are: "Mutual benefit, mutually convenient for each other", "Equal assistance, simpler and purer relationships", "Possibly neighbors, fellow villagers, or workplaces close by, making it easier to be cordial." The top three specific manifestations of trust and kindness among strangers in carpooling are: "Relaxed and pleasant communication", "Mutual understanding and consideration", and "Mutual care and assistance," with selection rates of 68.28%, 66.18%, and 55.34% respectively. One carpool passenger shared, "I often travel with my child, who can be unruly and noisy, but the hosts are never annoyed, instead they soothe the child or offer snacks to them, which makes me prefer carpooling for my trips." Another carpool host said, "I gave a ride to a girl studying art, praised her talent sincerely, told her life is not easy, and encouraged her to study hard and get into her ideal school." The top five mechanisms on the carpool platform to enhance trust among strangers are: "Display of personal credit scores," "Platform security guarantee mechanism," "Display of good review rates," "Display of real-name authentication," and "Show if traveled together before", with credit score selection rate exceeding fifty percent. So, how does the carpool platform enhance trust among strangers? In response to "Which mechanism on the Dida Carpool platform is most helpful in enhancing trust between strangers?" the respondents chose the top five items as "Display of personal credit scores," "Platform security guarantee mechanism," "Display of good review rates," "Display of real-name authentication," and "Show if traveled together before", with selection rates of 54.33%, 46.67%, 46.41%, 40.97%, and 40.28% respectively. All eleven product mechanisms voted on by users are already in use and continuously evolving on the DIDA INC platform. In addition to the top five mechanisms, the other six are: "Specific display of good and bad reviews," "Pre-trip order notes," "Display of qualification audit situation," "Whether mutual good reviews are displayed," and "Whether recently online is displayed." Currently, the credit scoring mechanism is widely used in various scenarios of Dida carpooling, involving performance, safety, evaluation, and activity dimensions, and is continuously updated based on user behavior, becoming an important means of positively guiding users to be punctual, trustworthy, polite, and friendly in carpooling. The display of good review rates, as well as the specific positive and negative details of reviews, are aimed at achieving more fair and transparent supervision, helping to promote more users to practice "the way of hospitality" and "the way of hitchhiking" in carpooling. The "whether traveled together before" and "whether mutual good reviews are displayed" are product mechanisms for users who have traveled together before, aiming to create more convenience conditions for repeated travel and make carpooling more relaxed and enjoyable. Moreover, users also expect the following mechanisms to further enhance trust among strangers, with the top three selections including "Display of received small red flowers number," "Display of interests or hobbies tags," and "Display of occupation." For the reasons shared, users who chose the "small red flowers number" said, "Small red flowers are a surprise and a form of trust and support," "To some extent, small red flowers can reflect the quality of the host or passenger." Users who chose the interests and hobbies tags believed that "common interests can make communication between both parties smoother" and "interests can shorten the distance between each other." In addition, users also proactively mentioned "platform security reminders," "completion rate disclosure," and "note personal carpool requirements," which also help increase trust among fellow travelers. Over seventy percent of the surveyed users have received goodwill from strangers in their daily lives. Nearly eighty percent of users believe that carpooling warm experiences will make them trust and be more friendly towards strangers in their daily lives. So, how is the current situation of goodwill flowing between strangers in various aspects of daily life? Nearly seventy percent of surveyed users stated that they have received small kindness from strangers in their lives, with 27.71% of respondents stating that they "often receive" and 40.82% stating that they "sometimes receive." In addition, 25.8% of respondents said they "rarely receive." At the same time, nearly 95% of respondents said they have "actively helped strangers and shown kindness to strangers in daily life," with nearly 50% saying "often" and nearly 45% saying "sometimes." Furthermore, nearly eighty percent of respondents said, "The small red flowers from Dida and the warm experiences gained in carpooling will make them trust and be more friendly towards strangers in their daily lives," to a certain extent verifying the trust spillover effect of carpooling, inspiring goodwill to flow naturally between strangers and extend to various aspects of daily life, making kindness toward strangers a habit for more people. Respondents expressed, "Feeling less social anxiety when interacting with strangers, more willing to communicate with strangers," and "After experiencing warmth, they will feel that the next stranger is also warm.""Receiving a small red flower will make people feel better, feel the recognition and goodwill of the other party, and make me more willing to contact new strangers."This report is also based on the Dida Small Red Flower story from 2023-2024, summarizing nearly fifty trust images, divided into three categories: passengers giving flowers to drivers, drivers giving flowers to passengers, and mutual giving between drivers and passengers. Among them, mutual giving scenes include appreciating each other's shining points, appreciating good Chinese drivers and passengers, encouraging and blessing each other, and expressing joy in carpooling. To some extent, this confirms the unique humanistic ecology externalized by ride-sharing based on the core of equality and mutual assistance. Based on the equal and mutual assistance of ride-sharing, ride-sharing is more likely to form a friendly and inclusive natural atmosphere. Combining the advantages of integration into daily high-frequency life scenarios, Wuxi Online Offline Communication Information Technology Co., Ltd. is able to innovate and elevate the dimension of trust between strangers, enabling more people to actively give trust and respect to others in life and enhance self-realization through mutual trust. From this survey, it can be seen that with the improvement of cultural education levels, the increasingly sound legal system, the more sound personal credit system, and the increasingly good social order, most people clearly feel a greater sense of trust and friendliness among strangers. The vigorous development of social media and internet platforms further promotes information interaction and personal credit transparency among strangers, continuously reducing the cost of trust between strangers, promoting various transactions and collaborations, and becoming a new microeconomic momentum for economic and social development. Ride-sharing, based on the combination of Wuxi Online Offline Communication Information Technology Co., Ltd. and scene trust mechanisms, continues to strengthen, gradually breaking down barriers between more strangers and turning them into friendliness, care, acceptance, and encouragement. Through Dida Small Red Flowers, it enhances the natural flow of goodwill and further solidifies the micro foundation of social trust. It is foreseeable that as more internet platforms build trust frameworks for strangers based on their respective scenes, more real weak links between people will be established, making economic and social activities more smooth and efficient, and making everyone feel more happiness.
