First Pacific (00142) announced that its subsidiary, PacificLight Power Pte. Ltd. (PLP), has been authorized by the Energy Market Authority of Singapore (EMA) to construct, own, and operate a hydrogen-fueled combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facility on Jurong Island. The facility is scheduled to commence operation in January 2029 and will be the largest single H-class CCGT power plant in Singapore, with a minimum capacity of 600 megawatts, making it the most efficient facility of its kind. The new power plant will enhance PLP's competitiveness and growth trajectory, while also providing maximum operational flexibility. EMA selected PLP through a rigorous selection process to ensure a balanced electricity supply policy in line with the expected demand growth in the Singapore energy market. In addition to the existing 830 megawatts CCGT facility that has been operational since 2014, and the 100 megawatts Fast Start project currently under construction and set to commence operation in the second quarter of this year, the new power plant will add additional capacity. It will be built in a new location and will include a large battery energy storage system - the first integration of a CCGT unit with a battery energy storage system in Singapore. The project underscores PLP's commitment to using cutting-edge solutions to improve system stability, reduce operational costs, and minimize environmental impact. The new power plant will initially be able to generate electricity using at least 30% hydrogen, with the ability to transition to 100% hydrogen combustion in the future, depending on market and regulatory requirements. The new location on Jurong Island will accommodate a second CCGT unit as well as the potential integration of carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies in the future, solidifying PLP's commitment to long-term decarbonization strategies.
