In 2024, new car sales in the United States continued to rise, rebounding from historic lows caused by the pandemic and supply chain shortages over the past four years. Traditional American car manufacturers General Motors Company (GM.US) and Ford Motor Company (F.US) both announced their best annual new car sales performance in the United States since 2019, thanks to the growth of electric vehicles such as fully electric and hybrid models.
These results are in line with industry expectations for car manufacturers. Market research companies predict that total sales for American car manufacturers in 2024 will be close to 16 million vehicles, making it the best year for the industry since selling approximately 17 million vehicles in 2019.
Stephanie Brinley, Vice President of the Mobility Intelligent Division at S&P Global, Inc., said, "With growth in the fourth quarter, our sales in 2024 will be close to 16 million vehicles. Given some affordability and inflation headwinds, this could be a good year... It's moving in the direction we need."
It is expected that car sales will continue to grow in 2025, but still remain below the levels seen in 2019. S&P Global Mobility and Edmunds estimate car sales for this year to be around 16.2 million vehicles.
General Motors Company remains the top-selling car manufacturer in the United States, followed closely by Ford. General Motors Company announced that fourth quarter sales increased by 21% compared to the previous year, with a 4% increase in sales in 2024 reaching 2.7 million vehicles, including full-size pickup truck sales reaching their highest level since 2007 for the fifth consecutive year.
General Motors Company stated that the sales growth was mainly driven by increased sales across all four of its American brands, as well as a 50% increase in electric vehicle sales to over 114,000 vehicles. Despite the significant growth in electric vehicle sales, electric vehicles only accounted for 4.2% of the company's total sales. General Motors Company estimates that in the fourth quarter of last year, the company held a 12% share of the American electric vehicle market.
While General Motors Company announced its performance, its local competitor Ford Motor Company also saw growth in fourth quarter and annual sales. The company reported a significant increase in sales of "electrified" vehicles including electric and hybrid vehicles. Ford reported that fourth quarter total U.S. vehicle sales increased by 8.8% to 530,000 vehicles, with electric vehicle sales totaling 77,300 vehicles in the fourth quarter; retail sales in the fourth quarter increased by 17%. Car sales in 2024 reached 2.08 million vehicles, higher than the less than 2 million vehicles sold in 2023. In 2019, this car manufacturer sold 2.42 million vehicles in the United States.
Ford Motor Company stated that annual sales of its traditional internal combustion engine vehicles increased by 0.2% compared to 2023, while electric vehicle sales increased by 38.3% compared to the previous year. Electric vehicles, including hybrid and electric vehicles, accounted for 13.7% of Ford's total annual sales.
Several other car manufacturers such as Toyota Motor Corp. Sponsored ADR (TM.US), Hyundai, and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR (HMC.US) also announced single-digit annual sales growth on Friday, which mostly align with industry expectations. Toyota Motor Corp. Sponsored ADR ranked third in sales, followed by Hyundai in fourth place, with Honda and the parent company of Chrysler, Stellantis (STLA.US), closely behind, with the latter seeing a significant decline in sales in recent years.
Toyota Motor Corp. Sponsored ADR announced a 3.7% increase in sales in 2024, despite a 7.1% decrease in sales in December of last year. The company sold over 2.3 million vehicles last year. Honda announced an 8.8% increase in sales last year, reaching 1.4 million vehicles, with a 9.9% increase in sales in the last month of the year.
Hyundai's brand saw a growth of approximately 4% in sales in 2024, reaching a record 837,000 vehicles. Hyundai's sister company, Kia, also announced that its sales in the United States reached a record 796,000 vehicles in 2024, an increase of 1.8% from the record set in 2023.
Stellantis reported that its sales in the United States decreased by 15% in 2024, to around 1.3 million vehicles, marking the worst year since 2010 for the company. The brand with the largest decline in sales within Stellantis was Dodge, with a 29% decrease, followed by Ram Trucks and Alfa Romeo with a 19% decrease. Their popular Jeep brand saw a 9% decrease in sales.
