To commemorate the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, the US stock market will be closed on January 9th. Carter passed away at his home on December 29th at the age of 100.
President Biden announced that January 9th will be observed as a national day of mourning in the US. On this day, a state funeral for President Carter will be held at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC.
Both the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ Stock Market will be closed on that day to show respect for President Carter.
Lynn Martin, President of the NYSE Group, stated in a release, "The New York Stock Exchange will be closed on the national day of mourning to honor the lifetime of service President Carter gave to our country."
NASDAQ President Tal Cohen also said, "We mourn the passing of President Carter and will close the US markets on the national day of mourning to commemorate his excellent contributions to our nation and the world."
Jimmy Carter served as President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He lost his bid for reelection in 1980 to Ronald Reagan. Carter was a Navy veteran and later served as the 76th Governor of Georgia. After leaving office, he dedicated over 40 years to humanitarian work globally through the Carter Center, earning widespread respect.
The closure of the US stock market to honor a specific individual or event is extremely rare. The last similar event was on December 5, 2018, to commemorate the passing of the 41st President of the United States, George H. W. Bush. Other examples of market closures due to disasters or major events include Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and the "9/11" terrorist attacks in 2001.
