The data released by the National Bureau of Statistics shows that in 2024, the national cotton planting area was 42.574 million mu, an increase of 752,000 mu from the previous year, an increase of 1.8%; the yield was 144.8 kilograms per mu, an increase of 10.4 kilograms per mu from the previous year, an increase of 7.8%; the production was 6.164 million tons, an increase of 546,000 tons from the previous year, an increase of 9.7%.
1. The national cotton planting area increased
In 2024, the national cotton planting area was 42.574 million mu, an increase of 752,000 mu from the previous year, an increase of 1.8%. In terms of regions, Xinjiang's cotton planting area was 36.719 million mu, an increase of 1.179 million mu from the previous year, an increase of 3.3%. This year, Xinjiang's cotton target price remained at a relatively high level, cotton planting expected income was stable, cotton farmers were actively planting, and the area increased significantly. Other cotton-growing areas were influenced by factors such as relatively low cost-effectiveness and adjustment of planting structure, and the overall cotton planting area showed a decreasing trend. Among them, the cotton planting area in the Yangtze River Basin was 3.021 million mu, a decrease of 49,000 mu from the previous year, a decrease of 1.6%; the cotton planting area in the Yellow River Basin was 2.463 million mu, a decrease of 387,000 mu from the previous year, a decrease of 13.6%.
2. The national cotton yield increased
In 2024, the national cotton yield was 144.8 kilograms per mu, an increase of 10.4 kilograms per mu from the previous year, an increase of 7.8%. In terms of regions, since self-planting cotton in Xinjiang, there has been sufficient light, temperature, and water, overall meteorological conditions have been favorable for cotton growth and development, and growth has been significantly better than the previous year, especially in the picking period when there were many clear days in Xinjiang, which was conducive to increasing cotton yield and quality. In 2024, the cotton yield in Xinjiang was 154.9 kilograms per mu, an increase of 11.0 kilograms per mu from the previous year, an increase of 7.6%. In other cotton-growing areas, the agricultural meteorological conditions in the Yangtze River Basin were comparable to last year, cotton planting techniques improved, varieties were optimized, cotton yield remained stable and increased, with a yield of 73.2 kilograms per mu, an increase of 1.8 kilograms per mu from the previous year, an increase of 2.5%; in the Yellow River Basin, the early high temperatures and drought, and later rainfall affected cotton production slightly, with a yield of 83.7 kilograms per mu, a decrease of 0.1 kilograms per mu from the previous year, a decrease of 0.2%.
3. National cotton production achieved growth
Driven by the increase in planting area and yield, national cotton production achieved growth. In 2024, the national cotton production was 6.164 million tons, an increase of 546,000 tons from the previous year, an increase of 9.7%. Among them, cotton production in Xinjiang was 5.686 million tons, an increase of 574,000 tons from the previous year, an increase of 11.2%; cotton production in the Yangtze River Basin was 221,000 tons, an increase of 2,000 tons from the previous year, an increase of 0.8%; cotton production in the Yellow River Basin was 206,000 tons, a decrease of 33,000 tons from the previous year, a decrease of 13.7%.
