Note that Netflix (NFLX.US) will be the focus of Christmas, with the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburgh Steelers game broadcasting at 1:00 pm Eastern Time, followed by the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans game at 4:30 pm Eastern Time. Beyonc will also perform during the halftime show of the Ravens vs. Texans game.
During the highly anticipated Tyson vs. Paul boxing match, Netflix experienced a major service outage. The boxing event was free for Netflix subscribers, but there were frequent buffering and error messages during the live stream, resulting in a poor user experience.
These issues included buffering, audio problems, and image quality problems for some viewers. Netflix has 282.3 million subscribers in 190 countries, making it one of the largest streaming platforms.
In a statement, Netflix said, "We now know from experience what our main pressure points are on our infrastructure and quickly resolved these issues before the NFL games." "Some behaviors of our live system could not be replicated in testing and can only be seen in large-scale real audiences. We have conducted a detailed study and are adjusting our content delivery, encoding, and streaming protocols accordingly."
For investors, an interesting aspect of the Christmas NFL games is that Netflix will have advertising time, with sponsors including FanDuel and Verizon.
Netflix signed a three-year Christmas broadcasting agreement with the National Football League (NFL), but cannot guarantee that the company will broadcast more than one game in 2025 and 2026.
Looking ahead, Netflix has signed an agreement to livestream WWE events and the Women's World Cup Championship in 2027 and 2031.
