In August, the number of tourists entering Macau during the summer vacation period increased by 13.3% compared to the same period last year, reaching a new monthly record.

On September 23, data from the Macao Statistics and Census Bureau showed that the number of inbound tourists during the summer vacation in August reached a record high of 3,651,731, an increase of 13.3% compared to the same period last year, and an increase of 0.8% compared to 2019; a 20.9% increase compared to July. However, the number of overnight tourists (2,041,362) and staying tourists (1,610,369) increased by 23.4% and 2.7% respectively. The average stay for tourists was 1.1 days, a decrease of 0.1 days compared to the same month last year, with staying tourists staying an average of 2.3 days, an increase of 0.1 days. In terms of visitor source analysis, the number of tourists from mainland China in August increased by 18.5% to 2,752,322, with individual tourists (1,466,190) increasing by 9.3%; tourists from the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao increased by 21.3% to 1,346,743. In August, the number of individual tourists in ten new cities increased by 17.1% to 45,599, with 51.9% being individual tourists (23,652). Tourists from Taiwan (73,629) increased by 26.7%, while tourists from Hong Kong (663,449) decreased by 6.8%. Compared to the same period in 2019, the number of tourists from mainland China increased by 4%, while tourists from Hong Kong and Taiwan recovered to 99.6% and 77.3% respectively. There were a total of 162,331 international tourists in August, an increase of 25.5% compared to the same period in 2019, reaching 75.3%. In the Southeast Asian market, tourists from the Philippines (35,180), Malaysia (7,647), and Singapore (5,806) increased by 31.7%, 4.9%, and 1.9% respectively, while tourists from Indonesia (10,054) and Thailand (6,383) decreased by 10.1% and 23% respectively. Tourists from Northeast Asia, including South Korea (36,923) and Japan (10,582), increased by 61.4% and 24.8% respectively, while tourists from the United States (10,295) in the long-haul market increased by 18.2%. In terms of entry channels, the number of tourists entering by air in August increased by 24.7% to 282,733. The number of tourists entering by land increased by 16% to 2,986,134, with tourists entering through the ports of entry (1,495,115), the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (846,240), and Hengqin Port (514,291) accounting for 50.1%, 28.3%, and 17.2% respectively. The number of tourists entering by sea (382,864) decreased by 9.2%. In the first eight months of 2024, a total of 23,392,903 inbound tourists were recorded, an increase of 32.7% compared to the same period last year, and reaching 85.3% of the same period in 2019; international tourists (1,503,936) recovered to 68.9%. The number of overnight tourists (12,526,527) and staying tourists (10,866,376) increased by 46.3% and 19.8% respectively. The average length of stay for tourists (1.2 days) decreased by 0.1 day; the average stay for overnight tourists (0.2 days) decreased by 0.1 day, while staying tourists' stay remained unchanged at 2.3 days.
