General Motors Company (GM.US) announced earlier this week that it will lay off nearly 1,700 employees at its assembly and stamping plant in Fairfax, Kansas. The automaker made this announcement in a worker adjustment and retraining notice submitted to the Kansas Department of Commerce. The layoffs of 680 workers are set to begin on November 18th. General Motors Company has been carrying out multiple rounds of layoffs this year. The plant in Kansas City, Kansas, opened in 1987 and produces Chevrolet Malibu sedans and Cadillac XT4 SUVs. General Motors Company stated that the plant employs about 2,300 workers. Earlier this year, General Motors Company announced that production of the Malibu will cease in November. According to the Detroit Free Press, a spokesperson for General Motors Company said that the layoffs are "temporary" and the company will invest $390 million to retool the plant for the production of the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle. The spokesperson mentioned that the plant is expected to restart production by mid-2025. Production of the XT4 will pause in January, with the remaining temporary layoffs starting from then. The spokesperson for General Motors Company told the newspaper that production of the SUV will resume after the restructuring is complete. There have been multiple reports of layoffs at General Motors Company this year. In mid-August, the company laid off employees in China, including staff in departments such as research and development, as part of a larger restructuring of its operations in the country with local partner SAIC Motor Corporation (SAIC). In the same month, General Motors Company announced over 1,000 layoffs in its global software and services division, including around 600 positions in the tech center near Detroit, with about half of the cuts taking place in the United States. The company mentioned in a statement that they must simplify processes, prioritize speed and excellence, make bold choices, and focus on investments that will have the greatest impact as they build the future of General Motors Company.
