The Productivity Council of Hong Kong launched the ESGOne in January this year to promote corporate awareness and capabilities in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) issues. Within six months, over 500 companies have become members.
The Hong Kong Productivity Council launched ESGOne in January this year to promote corporate awareness and capabilities in ESG (environmental, social, and governance). In just six months, over 500 companies have become members. Tony Cheung, Chief Innovation Officer of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, stated that the best performing industries in ESG are construction; administrative and support services; transportation, storage, postal, and courier services; and manufacturing. The Hong Kong Productivity Council also conducted an evaluation of the performance of ESGOne, which showed that over 85% of companies have established clear policies and codes of conduct to promote anti-corruption and anti-bribery; 60% of companies have established reporting mechanisms and taken measures to protect whistleblowers from retaliation. In terms of resource and recycling, over 70% of companies have set at least two goals related to improving resource efficiency, such as saving electricity, fuel, water, waste, or materials; 38% of companies have signed at least one environmental-related agreement to demonstrate their commitment to the environment. In terms of carbon reduction and climate change, 75% of companies have considered potential risks posed by climate change, such as extreme weather events or environmental changes, and their impact on company operations; less than 50% of companies have calculated scope one/scope two carbon emissions. In supply chain management, 62% of companies consider specific sustainability performance when selecting new suppliers and tracking existing suppliers; 53% of companies consider specific sustainability standards when choosing new suppliers. Furthermore, Geng Yongheng, Deputy General Manager of Personal Finance and Wealth Management Department of BOC Hong Kong (02388), stated that after completing the ESGOne performance evaluation card, applying for a business wealth management account online can enjoy a fee waiver offer, and successful applicants can also enjoy over HK $15,000 worth of new customer rewards.
