On July 17th local time, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt confirmed that US Attorney General Bondi and Secretary of the Interior Bergam visited Alcatraz Island prison in San Francisco Bay, California, to advance President Trump's May directive to evaluate the reopening of the prison. Levitt said at a press conference that if reopened, the prison will be under the jurisdiction of the US Federal Bureau of Prisons, with the Interior Department taking on important responsibilities. She said the prison will incarcerate American high-profile criminals and illegal foreign offenders awaiting deportation, calling them "the nation's most heinous criminals." Earlier in May of this year, US President Trump stated that he was directing the reopening of Alcatraz Island prison. The prison, closed in 1963 and opened as a tourist attraction in 1973, is also the prototype and filming location for many well-known movies. The reopening plan has sparked controversy from various parties.
