AMD (AMD.US) acquisition of World Labs wins praise from Wall Street, doubles down on physical AI layout.
AMD (AMD.US) unexpectedly announced a plan to acquire World Labs in an all-stock deal valued at $8.2 billion, a move that has received a positive response from Wall Street.
AMD (AMD.US) unexpectedly announced a planned all-stock acquisition of World Labs for $8.2 billion, a move that received a positive response from Wall Street. Citi analyst Atif Malik said that incorporating World Labs and its founder Fei-Fei Li (hailed as the "Godmother of AI") will give the company "deeper insight" into the direction of AI model evolution. AMD shares rose 1.2% in premarket trading on Tuesday.
AMD, whose overall market value recently topped $1 trillion for the first time, abruptly announced on Monday U.S. Eastern Time that it would acquire World Labs, an AI startup founded by "Godmother of AI" Fei-Fei Li, for $8.2 billion, bringing one of the most core AI research forces in the fields of world models and spatial intelligence into the chip giant's comprehensive business portfolio.
AMD CEO Lisa Su said in a media interview on Monday, "The deeper the understanding of the entire end-to-end process, the better systems we can build."
"That is why we are acquiring World Labs," Su said. "We want to gain the world-class AI large-model research talent that Fei-Fei Li has brought together and fully combine it with AMD's capabilities in hardware, software, and systems."
The acquisition move won high praise from several major Wall Street banks. Malik wrote in a note to clients: "We believe the motivations for this deal include: 1) absorbing more top AI engineers (reports say the company has about 70 employees); 2) gaining a more favorable position in physical AI; 3) building better end-to-end systems. We maintain AMD as our most favored growth-oriented computing semiconductor stock for 2026." Malik gave AMD a "Buy" rating and a price target of $575.
RBC analyst Srini Pajjuri held a similar view, believing that acquiring this private AI research lab could "help the company provide full-stack solutions for the Siasun Robot&Automation, simulation, and physical AI markets, which are still in their early stages." Although AMD has brought in "world-class AI research teams and model experts" such as Fei-Fei Li, Pajjuri believes that NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US), with its Omniverse platform, still maintains a "significant" lead in spatial AI and physical simulation. Pajjuri gave AMD a "Sector Perform" rating and a price target of $540.
Wells Fargo & Company analyst Joe Quatrochi gave AMD an "Overweight" rating and a price target of $700, saying the core of the deal lies in providing better forward-looking vision. Quatrochi wrote in a report: "We believe that incorporating World Labs further expands AMD's open AI ecosysteminvestors may compare it with NVIDIA Corporation's Omniverse, Cosmos, and Isaac ecosystems."
