American media reveal more details of imminent US-Iran agreement.
According to reports from US media, the US and Iran are about to reach an agreement, which includes extending the ceasefire for another 60 days, reopening the Strait of Hormuz during this period, allowing Iran to freely sell oil, and starting negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.
According to the Axios news website in the United States on May 23, the United States and Iran are about to reach an agreement, which includes extending the ceasefire for another 60 days. During this time, the Strait of Hormuz will reopen, Iran will be able to freely sell oil, and negotiations will begin on Iran's nuclear program.
The report quoted a U.S. official as saying that the U.S. and Iran will sign a memorandum of understanding with a validity period of 60 days, which can be extended by mutual agreement. During the 60-day validity period, the Strait of Hormuz will be "freely open", Iran has agreed to clear its mines in the strait and ensure the freedom of navigation for ships. In exchange, the U.S. will lift the blockade on Iranian ports, grant some sanction exemptions, and allow Iran to freely sell oil.
The official stated that the core principle of the U.S. is "action for relaxation". Iran has requested an immediate unfreezing of funds and a permanent lifting of sanctions, but the U.S. has indicated that these demands will only be met after Iran makes substantial concessions. The draft memorandum of understanding includes commitments from Iran to never seek nuclear weapons and to negotiate on suspending uranium enrichment activities and transferring high-enriched uranium stocks.
Additionally, the draft memorandum of understanding also explicitly calls for an end to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The report mentioned that the U.S. official provided a detailed outline of the current draft, and other sources confirmed most of the content, but details have not been verified by the Iranian side. The draft is not yet finalized, and negotiations could still collapse, but the White House hopes to resolve remaining differences in the next few hours and announce the agreement on the 24th.
